Types of schools in Taiwan

1. Language schools (kindergarten &elementary)

Language schools or buxibans employ most ESL teachers in Taiwan. Most of them are in Taipei, they have a presence in other cities too. Most buxibans are after schools programs, with classes starting from 5~9 pm. With this arrangement you have free mornings all too yourself. You’ll teach kindergarten and elementary students depending on your schools program. Buxibans typically offer an average of NT$600 per hour. In order to qualify for a work visa, you should be working a minimum of 14 hours per week. Buxibans have their own set curriculum.  Teachers at these institutions are not required to do administrative work. Teachers are allowed to work for multiple language schools. This is great if you want to supplement your pay.

2. Public schools

Over the past few years public school jobs have been on a steady rise. The hiring requirements are a bit stringent. Teachers need to be certified teachers in their home countries. The environment at public schools is relaxed. Teachers prepare their own teaching resources. This is a great opportunity to develop your own curriculum or to be creative. Teachers are required to do a few hours of administrative work.  Public schools offer stable competitive salaries and offer great benefits.
